Even though Windows Setup will boot from the USB, Windows Setup itself cannot read the partition needed to install Windows. It simply does not create a valid Windows 10/11 installation USB. The culprit was the Linux Disk Image Writer utility I was using to create the LiveUSB. Then, inspiration struck: “Maybe this is not a driver issue at all?” The Culprit The last part about seeing the same error message on every system I tried revealed the clue. Windows Setup refused to continue without the needed drivers…whatever they might be. Even more bizarre, I tried different motherboards, hardware configurations, and even completely different computer systems, but Windows Setup kept prompting with the above error message asking for media drivers. I tried remaking the LiveUSB using Disk Image Writer using different USBs in case something went wrong creating the first. I also tried various SSDs and NVMe devices until only a single SSD and the installation USB remained. Setup went well with the virtual machine, so there were no problems with the Windows ISO due to a corrupted download. I even tested the ISO with a temporary virtual machine. The Windows ISO was definitely good because it was downloaded directly from the official Microsoft web site. Even though I could browse and locate drivers through the setup prompt, no driver worked. Absolutely nothing worked, and Windows Setup kept asking for installation media drivers. I fiddled for hours with various BIOS/UEFI Secure Boot and CSM settings in case that might make a difference. I even reflashed the motherboard’s BIOS firmware and reset CMOS but to no avail. I tried chipset, SSD, NVMe, sound, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RST (Rapid Storage Technology) drivers, and many more. I even downloaded new drivers straight from hardware product web sites (using Linux, of course), but still this error message persisted. Nothing worked and no driver solved the problem. I even dusted off a lonely DVD-ROM drive just to install the original motherboard drivers from various CD-ROMs shipped with motherboards. As a result, I spent hours upon hours of trial and error installing drivers from various installation CD-ROMs. All hardware more than met the specs for a Windows installation.Īny arm chair expert’s first response would be, “Just install the drivers.” Okay, which drivers? This is an incredibly vague error message that does not specify which media driver is missing. Windows was being installed from a LiveUSB created using the built-in Linux Disk Image Writer utility to a standard SATA III SSD in perfect working condition. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice. After searching for drivers from ANY installation media that contains valid drivers, this prompt always appears. r/pfsense - for all things pfsense ('nix firewall) Might be able to find things useful for a lab. r/hardwareswap - Used hardware, swap hardware. r/buildapcsales - For sales on building a PC r/linux - All flavors of Linux discussion & news - not for the faint of heart!
